TALOQAN (Pajhwok): The overcoat producers in the northern Takhar province have demanded supports this promotion and stability of their overcoat making handicraft industry.

Overcoat production can play vital role in the economic development of the individuals associated with this industry, a overcoat also called Chapan producer said on Wednesday.

The locally produced Chapan has a good market during winter season because it is warm and wearing Chapan is considered a tradition of the people in central Asian countries. But the Chapan which is produced in Takhar province has more attractive colors.

Baba Jan, the owner of a traditional factory of Chapan said, they inherited this profession from their ancestors and they get a good income from this profession to feed his 10 members family.

Producing a Chapan needs a week of time, cotton and some special yarn, as this handicraft product is warm, it is very popular among the people in cold season, Baba Jan said.

Each Chapan is sold for up to 7,000 afs, Baba added.

Imam Ali, a Chapan seller of Chah Ab district said, Chapan was worn only by the tribal elders and famous figures in the past, but now wearing Chapan outfit is common among all the people especially in cold winter time.

Imam Ali added, silk made Chapan is one of the most popular handicraft product of Chah Ab district, if the product is exported to other countries, it can play a positive role in growth of the families economies.

At mean time, Mawlawi Ziauddin, the head of provincial Trade and Industry department said, we try to export this product to the neighboring countries and launch special exhibition for this products to keep this industry alive.

It is worth mentioning that Chapan usually worn in the cold winter time and it is an ancient custom of the northern and northeastern region of Afghanistan while most of this handicraft is produces in Rustaq and Chah Ab districts of Takhar province.
