Religious, educational program launched for Herat prisoners

HERAT (Pajhwok): Efforts have been launched to positively change the thoughts of prisoners and to create job opportunities for them in western Herat province, officials said on Saturday.

Maulavi Mohammad NabiKhalil, director of the Herat prison, said the Islamic Emirate aimed to train and educate prisoners and find jobs for them in order they live an honorable life in society after their release.

A program of literacy and religious education has been launched in two separate parts for male and female prisoners, Khalil said.

Khalil said there were 1,750 prisoners in the Herat prison who had been convicted of different crimes and more than 200 of them were female prisoners.

Matiulllah, one of the prisoners, appreciated the program and told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was better than anything else to keep the prisoners busy.

According to him, most of the prisoners suffer from psychiatric and mental problems and such programs can be constructive for criminals in the future and can play a significant role in reducing crimes.

In additional to educational programs, some institutions have launched health services for the prisoners as well.
