PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan and Afghanistan are together in the campaign against the poliovirus, says the federal health minister.

The ministerial statement comes after the detection of a poliovirus sample in sewage water in the Pakistan city of Lahore.

Experts found the Type-1 Wild Poliovirus (WPV1) virus belongs to Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, bordering Pakistan’s former tribal region of Khyber.

Minister Abdul Qadir Patel stressed: “The only way to stop the virus is to vaccinate all children under the age of five.”

National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) Coordinator Dr Shahzad Baig said the virus detection was not unexpected as Pakistan and Afghanistan were regarded as one epidemiological block.

The polioviruses moved across the Durand Line, given the widespread population movement, the official explained.

“We have worked closely with the Afghanistan programme and treat the virus in either country as our own. Neither Pakistan nor Afghanistan can be free of poliovirus until both stop its transmission.”
