KABUL (Pajhwok): In an expected development, the Islamic Emirate has formally taken control of the Afghan embassy in Tehran, media reports say.
The embassy was formally handed over to the caretaker Afghan government on Sunday afternoon, an Iran-based Afghan diplomat said.
According to Khaama Press, the outgoing Afghan ambassador transferred embassy documents and equipment to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Fazl Mohammad Haqqani, first secretary to the former Afghan ambassador to Iran, has been appointed as charge d’affaires in Tehran.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said it had played no role in changes to the Afghanistan embassy in Tehran.
Mehr News Agency quoted a ministry statement as saying: “The issue of handing over the Afghan embassy is an internal matter (for Afghanistan) …”
Despite initial reluctance, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs transferred the embassy’s control to IEA after months of negotiations.
Some months back, Pakistan and Russia handed over Afghanistan’s embassies to the caretaker Taliban administration, which has not been recognised by a single country.
