India to send Afghanistan wheat aid via Iran

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): India through World Food Programme (WFP) will send 20,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan via Chabahar, bypassing the Pakistani land route.

In New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs made the announcement on Tuesday at the first meeting of the India-Central Asia joint working group on Afghanistan.

India had sent Afghanistan about 40,000 metric tonnes (MT) of 50,000 MT promised last year after an agreement with the former Pakistani government.

However, the remaining shipments had to be called off in the wake of devastating floods in Pakistan, and the running out of the time period allowed by Islamabad.

India has used the Chabahar route in the past, prior to 2021, for sending shipments of wheat to Afghanistan.

MEA said: “The Indian side announced its partnership with WFP) for the delivery of 20,000 MTs of wheat for Afghan people through the Chabahar Port.”

The MEA statement came after the meeting of senior officials and envoys of India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
