JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Strawberry has been cultivated on 30 acres land in six districts of eastern Nangarhar province with each acre producing 800 kilograms of strawberry, an official said on Saturday.
The land fruit was grown in two districts on the past but due to decent revenue it generated the farmers four more districts switched to on their lands.
Farmers are satisfied from the profit of strawberries and called on other farmers to grow strawberries.
Shafiullah, a farmer of the Sra Rood District cultivated strawberries from the past five years on his lands.
He termed strawberries a good substitute to poppy, the revenue is good and it is increasing day by day, he said.
Obaidullah another farmer of Bati Kot District, grew strawberries on his one acre land, the considerable profit of other farmers drove me to the cultivation of strawberries, he said.
Obaidullah added: “in addition to the exploration of market, the government must help the farmers with building cold storages and provide us with necessary facilities about harvesting, packaging and keeping the strawberries as well”.
Nangarhar strawberries have more lovers in the market as well.
Mohammad Ullah, who sells strawberries said, strawberry have more clients, the demand for this product is also high and the sellers make considerable profit.
Nimatullah Akbary, the head of Agriculture and Livestock Department told Pajhwok Afghan News, strawberries are grown in six districts of Nangarhar province, the cultivation of strawberries is promoting bay by day.
He said: “Currently, the strawberries are cultivated on 30 acres of land in Dara-i-Noor, Sra Rood, Behsud, Bati Kot, Khogiani and Kama districts and every acre is producing 400 kilograms of strawberries, we try to expand the cultivation of this fruit to more districts and help for its marketing”.
The experts say, Nangarhar province has fertile lands, if the cultivation of poppy is substituted with other herbs, the farmers will get more profits.
