ASADABAD (Pajhwok): The residents of Bahrabad and Shonkar areas in the Sarkano district of eastern Kunar province have demanded the government to arrange clean drinking water facilities to them.

They said majority of natural sources of water had dried up and people have no access to drinking water that they needed.

Malak Jannat, the resident of Shonkarai area told Pajhwok Afghan News most natural streams in their area had dried up and people are facing serious problems related to the drinking water.

“We don’t have deep water wells in our area, around hundreds of families here arranged water with immense difficulty by traveling a long distance, we are financially not sound and could not arrange money to dug deep wells,” he said.

Local resident walk along way in the mountains and explore the remaining water resources to generate water.

Haji Khiyali Gul, another local elder, said due to drought water resources had dried up in the mountains and it could not provide water for hundreds of families living here.

“From the past one year, most streams in our mountains had dried up and the water of some streams had declined, we walk one or two hours and get the water for our need,” he said.

Habibullah, the resident of Sarkano’s Bahrabad area, said: “We had some water streams but now they had dried up now we get the river and streams water for our daily needs.”

Sarkano District Chief Mawlavi Aminullah told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Around 1,800 families live in the Shonkari and Bahrabad areas and some of them did not have access to clean drinking water.”

He hoped that all people in Sarkano district would have access to clean drinking water.

It is pertinent to mention that water resources had dried up in several parts of the country in recent year and people are struggling with access to drinking water.
