PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan’s Afghan policy is framed by unaccountable institutions, not parliament, says an outspoken lawmaker.
Mohsin Dawar, who chairs the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, remarked the country’s Afghan policy did not stem from the collective wisdom of parliament
Speaking at an event in Islamabad, he noted the lack of substantial parliamentary debate and public discussions on Pakistan’s Afghan policy.
He alleged policy makers had effectively assigned parliament’s space to non-elected and unaccountable institutions, which did not fully understand the situation in Afghanistan.
Dawar saw no justification for Pakistan’s obsession with Durand Line. He also assailed what he called Islamabad’s short-sighted approach to dealing the Afghanistan.
Successive Afghan governments have refused to accept the British-era Durand Line as an international border with Pakistan.
Asking legislators to reclaim their space in terms of formulating the country’s foreign policy, Dawar underlined the need for a candid public debate on the Afghan policy.
