Badghis Ghormatch district residents demand girls’ schools

QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Residents of Ghormach district of western Badghis province complain about lack of schools for girls in the district and ask the government to address the issue.

Jamshid, a resident, told Pajhwok Afghan News there was no girls’ schools in the district, not even elementary schools.

Lamenting the lack of girls’ school, he said: “We have no elementary schools or other educational institutes for girls. Seeking knowledge is obligatory for Muslim men and women. We ask the government to provide learning opportunities to our girls.”

Meanwhile, Noorullah, another resident of the district, also grumbled about the lack of girls’ schools and said being members of the society, girls should be provided with their right to education.

Worried about the future of girls, he added education was an inalienable right of girls and women and there should be no discrimination between boys and girls.

Criticizing the negligence of the previous government in establishing of schools for girls, he expected the Islamic Emirate to provide an opportunity for girls to gain knowledge so that they have bright future.

Education experts also call lack of girls’ schools an unfortunate phenomenon.

Syed Mohammad Fahim Intezar, a university professor in Badghis, said that providing education to all citizens of the country was one of the main duties of the government and girls’ schools from first to 6^th grades must be opened in remote parts of Badghis.

He said if the issue persisted, it would cause irreparable damage to the society and would lead to widespread illiteracy among women.

He said: “If schools for girls are not established, we will live in a society consisting of illiterate women and the damage will be irreparable.”

Mohibullah Ehsan, director of education, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Ghormach district was merged with Faryab province at the end of the previous government, but after the Islamic Emirate’s return, the district was again merged with Badghis province.

He added: “If the residents of Ghormach ask us officially, we will open girls’ schools for them.”

According to statistics provided by Badghis education department, there are currently 508 boys and girls schools in Badghis.
