Resolution for Austin’s impeachment introduced

KABUL (Pajhwok): A Florida legislator has introduced impeachment articles against US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Rep. Cory Mills accused the Pentagon chief of disregarding important intelligence in pursuing a hasty pullout from Afghanistan.

After Taliban’s return to power two years ago, the US lost 13 service members in a suicide attack on Kabul airport.

Mills unveiled the resolution on Friday –a day before the second anniversary of the deaths of American troops and scores of Afghans.

In a statement, the lawmaker said: “High-level officials in this administration blatantly ignored intel that Americans and our allied partners in Kabul would be left behind in harm’s way unless the US corrected course in our withdrawal.”

As a result, he added, about 200 people were killed at Abbey Gate. “Because of this clear dereliction of duty, today I am introducing articles of impeachment for Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.”

The resolution blamed Austin for high crimes and misdemeanors and failing to properly plan the withdrawal despite having at least eight months in advance.
