PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistani business community has called for the speedy clearance of vehicles and making the cargo train service functional.

A delegation of businessmen, headed by All Pakistan Custom Agents Association leader Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, demanded the removal of hurdles to trade between the neighbours.

At a meeting with new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Customs Chief Collector Muhammad Saleem, Sarhadi said many trucks laden with fresh fruits and vegetables were currently entering Pakistan from Afghanistan.

Around 150 to 200 trucks of soapstone and coal entered the country on a daily basis, he said, adding vehicular movement was being delayed by construction work on a terminal at Torkham,.

The delegation complained many containers had been stuck up at the Azakhel Dryport due to delays in clearance, inflicting heavy detention charges on businessmen.

Sarhadi noted the export business through Pakistan Railways had almost been at a standstill for years. “Such an economical mode of transportation needs restoration to provide relief to the business community.”

The chief collector promised necessary steps for the removal of hurdles to steady Pak-Afghan trade and ease of doing business.
