Refugee council voices concern as more Afghans held

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Amid an ongoing crackdown, Pakistani police have detained 76 more Afghan nationals for illegally residing in the port city of Karachi.

The fresh came during raids in Sharea Faisal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, PECHS, Aziz Bhatti and New Town areas, The News reported on Tuesday.

Senior police officer Irfan Bahadur said cases had been registered against the 43 detainees under the Foreigners Act.

In Kiamari district, police arrested 32 Afghan citizens in Saeedabad, Ittehad Town, Madina Colony, Site A-Section, Pak Colony, Jackson and Docks areas.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Refugee Council in Pakistan accused police of arbitrarily detaining 100 Afghan refugees in Karachi.

Mir Ahmad Rauf, head of the council, said: “Police have imposed heavy fines. They have taken actions on the pretext of illegal migration. This is a big concern.”
