KABUL (Pajhwok): Power utility Da Afghanistan Bareshna Shirkat (DABS) says agreement with Tajikistan on import of electricity has been renewed for another year.

DABS wrote on its website today that CEO Mullah Mohammad Haneef Hamza signed the electricity purchase agreement for 2024 in a meeting with his Tajik counterpart Mohammad Omar Asazada in Turkey.

Both sides also discussed a new 500KV transmission line from Tajikistan to Afghanistan, with the farmer showing interest in extending the line.

DABS said its leadership asked Tajikistan to cooperate with Afghanistan in restarting and implementing the ambitious CASA-1000 project.

The mega project will bring 1,300 megawatts of surplus electricity from Central Asia to high-demand electricity markets in South Asia through new energy infrastructure.

DABS spokesperson Hamkatullah Maiwand told Pajhwok Tajikistan would provide 100 to 120 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan under the new agreement.

He said electricity from Tajikistan would be connected to the general grid and would be supplied to northern and other provinces.

Afghanistan has also extended a deal with Uzbekistan to provide electricity for 2024.

Afghanistan currently relies on importing over 670MW of electricity from its neighbors Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
