MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Around 10,000 tonnes of commercial goods are daily exported and imported via railway at Hairatan port in northern Balkh province.
Mohammad Shafiq Mahmood, director of railway in Balkh, said that every day up to 160 wagons loaded with various types of goods arrive in Balkh from Central Asia via Hairatan port.
“Compared to 1401 solar year, the revenue during the first six months of the current solar year 1402 surged by 26 percent. Imported goods weighing up to 10,000 tonnes come from Central Asia in 160 wagons daily,” he added.
Meanwhile, some businessmen said they were happy with the rail transport service.
Attaullah Omari, a businessman at Hairatan port, told Pajhwok that railway transit was the easiest and cheapest way to transport goods.
He said: “Whenever we rent a commercial wagon and load goods in it, it must be unloaded and returned the same day at Hairatan, Aqeena and Torghondi ports.”
“If the wagon cannot return within 24 hours, traders must pay a fine of $30. The owner of the wagon should be fined too,” he added.
Meanwhile, Hairatan Railway Director Mohammad Shafiq Mehmood assured solution to problems being faced by Afghan traders in transit trade.
