55 killed as 70,000 flee heavy Brazil floods

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 55 people have been killed and nearly 70,000 forced to flee their homes as catastrophic floods and mudslides hit southeastern Brazil.

Brazil’s civil defense agency said on Saturday that heavy floods hit southern part of the country, according to BARRON’s.

At least 74 people were injured and another 67 were missing, the civil defense said.

The toll did not include two people who died in an explosion at a flooded gas station in Porto Alegre.

Fast-rising water levels in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were straining dams and particularly threatening economically important Porto Alegre, a city of 1.4 million.
