KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations says the meeting of special envoys for Afghanistan will be held in Doha on June 30 and July 1.
Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo visited Afghanistan from May 18 to 21, said a press release from the UN.
Rosemary DiCarlo met Afghan officials, the diplomatic community in Afghanistan and representatives of civil society.
She invited Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to participate at the forthcoming meeting of special envoys.
The meeting is aimed to increase international engagement with Afghanistan in a more coherent, coordinated and structured manner.
DiCarlo discussed with her interlocutors the various challenges that Afghanistan is facing, according to the UN statement, which gave no further details.
Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, chief spokesman for IEA, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the invitation from the UN to Doha meeting and said the caretaker government would make a decision on its participation.
He added: “If IEA’s conditions are taken into consideration, then we can decide to participate in the gathering.”
In February, IEA had skipped a similar meeting in the Qatari capital due to lack of opportunities for high-level talks on core issues and non-acceptance of the caretaker government’s conditions.
