GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Ten check dams have been constructed at a cost of 40 million afghanis in southern Ghazni province, an official said on Saturday.
Acting Minister of Energy and Water Mullah Abdul Latif Mansour told a ceremony in this regard that i the check dams had been constructed in Khogyani, Khwaja Omari, Deh Yak, Giro, Qarabagh and Nawa districts.
He said currently one check dam in each district was being constructed by the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW)..
He added construction work on check dams was underway in Malistan, Nawar, Gilan and Maqor districts.
He assured the residents of the province that his ministry would implement more development projects in the province.
Ghazni governor Hafiz Mohammad Amin said floodwater to be stored in these check dams will irrigate hundreds of acres of agricultural land.
The dams will help increase the underground water level, he said, adding the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was committed to water management.
On the other hand, residents of the province are also happy over the construction of these check dams.
Zakria, an inhabitant of Deh Yak district, told Pajhwok Afghan News Ghazni was an agriculture province and construction of check dams could further boost this sector.
Dozens of check dams have been constructed for water management by the government and partner organisations in the province, the official concluded.
