AIBAK (Pajhwok): Poppy crop has been destroyed on more than 200 acres of land by security forces in northern Samangan, Sar-i-Pul and central Panjsher provinces, police said on Tuesday.
Samangan police spokesman Hashmatullah Rahmani told Pajhwok Afghan News more than 168.5 acres of land was cleared of poppy during separate operations in different parts of Dar-i-Sof Payan district.
Rahmani said the counter-narcotics department had launched operations to eradicate the banned plant in various districts.
Sar-i-Pul police spokesman Hafiz Naqibullah Alamyar told Pajhwok a campaign to eradicate poppy was started three months ago and wrapped up today.
He said the campaign had been launched based on the decree of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA).
The anti-narcotics department has destroyed poppy on at least 35 acres, rounded up 88 drug addicts for treatment and arrested 25 drug smugglers, Alamyar added.
In Pajsher, poppy on one acres was destroyed by counter-narcotics department officials in Anaba district on Monday, police spokesman Abidullah Oqab explained.
“Police have been trying to prevent the cultivation and trafficking of drugs in Panjsher in compliance with IEA order.”
He said cultivation and smuggling of drugs had decreased to zero in the province.
