The decision reflected the opportunity that the June 17 division of the sanctions regime presented for the Taliban to seek reconciliation with the Afghan government, the US embassy in Kabul said.
A statement from the embassy said the action, requested by the government of Afghanistan, also served as an important signal that reconciliation could pay immediate dividends.
“We recognise and welcome the efforts made by the High Peace Council to work towards peace, stability and reconciliation generally and its contributions to the July 15 decision,” it added.
The delisting demonstrated the international community’s support for Afghan government efforts to engage reconciled Taliban who cut ties with Al Qaeda, abandoned violence and recognised the Afghan constitution, the embassy said.
