GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Highway security and bridge construction projects would be initiated soon in Maidan Wardak and Ghazni provinces, officials said on Tuesday.
Addressing a joint press conference, Maidan Wardak Governor Muhammad Haleem Fidayee and his Ghazni counterpart Musa Khan Akbarzada said the projects were of national importance.
The highways, which had either been damaged by militants with bombs or by overloaded vehicles, needed immediate attention, said the Ghazni governor. Calling highways the backbone of the country, Akbarzada said he would talk to governors of Paktika and Zabul on road security.
They would check the weight of vehicles with help from the Departments of Public Works, Traffic and Municipality, said Fidayee, who promised reconstruction of damaged roads and bridges.
Most of traffic accidents, caused by lousy roads, resulted in a loss of life, he said, adding the number of deaths in crashes and blasts bomb blasts on highways had increased.
