ISLAMABAD: Four people, including two policemen, were killed in a suicide attack by militants in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Thursday, officials said.
At least 14 people were injured in the suicide attack on a police vehicle in the Malir Halt area of the city. The outlawed rebel outfit Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility of the attack that targeted a senior police officer.
Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar told reporters he was the target. “I was moving with my squad in Malir Halt district, where the explosion took place. I escaped unhurt, but some of my men have been injured.”
Anwar, who reportedly received threats from the insurgents, was on his way to the court in connection with an inquiry into the killing of a senior lawyer.
With police investigating the incident, the bomb disposal squad said up to five kilograms of explosives were used in the bombing. Soon after the assault, Sind Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah sought a report from the provincial police chief.
