LASHKARGAH (PAN): More than 114 weapons were turned in to Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme of the Ministry of Defence in southern Helmand province on Sunday, officials said.
The weapons were seized from militants and an illegal private security firm during a string of operations in different parts of the province, the Helmand police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Col. Abdul Nabi Ilham said 83 heavy weapons were recovered from a security firm in Sangin district and the rest from insurgents over the past three months.
“Disarming the private firms is aimed at improving the security situation. At times, the militants gained access to these weapons and used them in criminal activities,” the police chief added.
Col. Mohammad Nasim, in charge of the DIAG programme in the province, the weapons would be initially kept at the Afghan National Army (ANA) depot in Helmand before being shifted to Kabul.
