KABUL) said on Friday.
Codenamed the Big Dam Operation, the joint activity featured the Italian military of the Transition Support Unit Centre (TSU-C) and Afghan National Army (ANA) personnel to ensure the safety of the northern and eastern parts of their area of responsibility.
A air quick reaction force of the 207th ANA Corps, supported by the military of the TSU-C, was transported to the construction of the Salma Dam to check safety conditions of the site together with supervisory personnel, a statement from the NATO-led force said.
Built in 1976, the dam has been a target for insurgents who, after having damaged it, were trying to impede the completion of renovation works to destabilise the area surrounding Chasht-i-Sharif district.
In an effort to ensure the freedom of movement on the main roads in the area, the troops accomplished two other major joint operations — one along the Ring Road and another in Oba district in support of a unit of the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP).
“The successful completion of these operations represents a significant further step for Afghan security forces towards the assumption of the full responsibility for the security of their country,” ISAF said.
