HERAT CITY (PAN): As many as 6,000 farmers in western Herat provinces would receive improved wheat seed and chemical fertilisers, an agricultural official promised on Tuesday.
Growers of the provincial capital and 15 districts would be given 152 tonnes of seed and 456 tonnes of fertilisers, Bashir Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Cooperative societies would distribute the aid — aimed at boosting wheat production in the province — to farmers in a month, he said. Last year, 2,000 growers had been given improved wheat seed.
As a result, Herat’s wheat yield jumped to 320 tonnes in 2012 from 280 tonnes in the previous year, according to the official.
A grower from Guzra district acknowledged the improved seed was a key factor in the increased wheat production. Gul Ahmad said his wheat yield had risen from three to four tonnes last year.
