GHAZNI CITY (PAN have planted around 300 landmines on roads in the Andar district of southern Ghazni province, an official said on Tuesday.

Provincial council head Abdul Jame Jame gave the statement two days after the killing of 18 wedding guests, including women and children, during a roadside bombing in the Sahib Khan village of the district.

Also a resident of Andar, Jame accused the insurgents of infesting roads, fields and deserts in the district with landmines that often killed government officials and civilians. He hoped residents would never let Taliban frighten them with such tactics.

Residents also complained of mine-infested roads and deserts. A dweller of Sahib Khan Kalay, Khairullah, said bomb blasts had become a routine occurrence in the district.

“Many of the insurgents operating in Andar are Pakistanis, who cared two hoots about the protection of civilian lives,” he alleged.

Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada agreed the landmines posed a serious threat to Andar people, acknowledging prevention of such attacks was difficult.

A day earlier, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied they had planted the bomb in Sahib Khan village. He blamed the Afghan Local Police for planting the explosive device.
