PUL-I-ALAM (PAN-fired mortar shell hit the district’s headquarters in central Logar province, police said on Sunday.

Logar deputy police chief Col. Abdul Wali Tofan told Pajhwok Afghan News the district chief, Abdul Khalil Kamal, was injured last night when one of the mortar rounds hit the district administration office.

He said Kamal had been shifted to a health facility of Afghan National Army troops and he is said to be in stable condition.

But the district’s population census office chief Nasir Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone that Kamal had been moved to a US military hospital from the ANA facility.

He said the district chief was in critical condition as of this morning, but he did not know about his current situation.

Asserting responsibility for the attack, the Taliban said Kamal was among 14 government forces killed. Their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Kamal’s deputy and several other officials were injured in the shelling.

He also said four civilians had been killed and 17 others wounded during an operation that left one fighter dead and seven others wounded over the past four days in the troubled town.
