KABUL (Pajhwok): Leading religious scholar and jihadi leader Abdur Rab Rassoul Sayyaf on Friday urged the two presidential candidates to spell out their programmes solidarity among the people and territorial integrity of the country.
“I believe that you (the presidential runners) — like other Afghans — are interested in peace, stability and national unity,” Sayyaf said in a statement, stressing clear plans for national harmony.
Recent testy exchanges between supporters of Dr. Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai not hurt the dignity of their leaders, but also lacerated the sentiments of those who desired national unity and solidarity, he observed.
One of the 11 contenders in the first round of the vote on April 5, he believed fueling ethnic, linguistic and regional tensions would have serious repercussions for the war-weary nation.
“My sincere and friendly advice to both candidates and their supporters is to respect Afghanistan’s integrity, national unity, solidarity among different ethnic communities and religious values,” he concluded.
