KABUL and other militant groups linked to violent extremism.
A Pakistani newspaper, The Express Tribune, reported on Thursday a formal announcement of the ban on the Haqqani network and 11 other militant organisations would be made in coming days.
A State Department spokeswoman said the US hailed reports of the ban Islamabad planned to slap on the networks. “This is an important step towards eliminating terrorist activity in Pakistan,” she said.
Marie Harf told a news briefing in Washington she was aware that an announcement was planned, but did not know the exact date. She offered no more details.
During his recent visit to Islamabad, the deputy spokeswoman said, Secretary of State John Kerry had detailed discussions conversations with Pakistani leaders on combating terrorism.
“Certainly he emphasised that we are committed to deepening our security partnership with Pakistan,” she said, days after Kerry urged Pakistan to crack down on the Haqqani network.
