KABUL in police said that women’s rights were being violated systematically.
Speaking at a gathering to mark International Women’s Day in the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Ulumi promised to raise the number of policewomen in the ministry.
Currently there are 2,200 active policewomen in MoI and the ministry was planning to raise the figures to 5,000 this year and to 10,000 in the next five years.
Ulumi said policewomen’s works and achievements were an asset and special focus would be given in training and professionalism of women police. He said discrimination and violence against women had no place and stern action would be taken against violators.
“It is our priority to support women in police ranks and we are trying to create an environment so that women could do their work in a fear-free environment,” he added.
Brig. Gen. Hekmat Shahi, head of gender and human rights at the MoI, said women faced with discrimination when it came to promotions. “Sometimes policewomen don’t even complain because of the consequences,” he noted.
