SHIBERGHAN (PAN): One militant was killed and three others suspects were captured alive during clashes with Afghan and international troops in northern Jawzjan and Kunduz provinces, officials said on Sunday.

Taliban fighters attacked the vehicle of a district chief in Jawzjan on Saturday night, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

One attacker was killed when guards of the Faizabad district police chief returned fire. The clash that lasted 30 minutes took place in Seh Toot area, the police chief said.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said five guards of the police officer were killed in the attack.  Several other guards were injured and the district police chief’s vehicle was damaged, he said.

The district police chief, Col. Ghulam Haidar, said that Taliban attacked a police checkpoint, but their attack was repelled.

Meanwhile, a Taliban insurgent was detained during a joint operation by Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on the outskirts of Shiberghan, Jawzjan’s capital, the alliance said in a statement.

The joint operation was launched in pursuit of a militant commander in the area, the statement said, without giving further details.

The statement also said two militants were detained in Khanabad district of northern Kunduz province.

The detainees were allegedly involved in planting roadside bombs and other disruptive activities, it added.
