PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Fifty welfare schemes have been executed by the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) in the northern province of Baghlan, officials said on Monday.

The projects included graveling of a 24-kilometre road, 86 wells, four micro hydroelectric power units, two suspension bridges, 14 culverts, a one-km protection wall and six community halls.

The schemes were implemented over the past seven months in Nahrain, Doshi, Khinjan, Barka, Tala Wa Barfak, Dohn-i-Ghori, Deh Salah, Khost, Pul-i-Hesar districts and Pul-i-Khumri, the provincial capital.

Rural Rehabilitation Departmentspokesman Mehrabuddinsaid the projects cost more than 120 million afghanis, with 10 percent contribution from the local people. Over 12,000 families have benefitted from the schemes.

A resident of Tala Wa Barfak, Sharafuddin, said:“The road of our area was in bad condition and we had to take our patients to clinics on donkeys. But now the distance has been reduced to 10 minutes.”

According to MRRD, over the past 10 years, up to 72,000 uplift projects have been completed by the ministry through nearly 35,000 councils, facilitating 21 million people in rural areas.
