Political parties set unity govt 2-week deadline

KABUL (Pajhwok): Political parties and movements on Friday set the government a two-week deadline to implement electoral reforms and guarantee transparency in the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections.

The ultimatum was issued during a gathering of political parties’ leaders and representatives in Kabul. They gave the government two weeks to act on their demands in a declaration issued at the end of the gathering.

“We are reminding the unity government leaders to act on our demands in the coming two weeks for guaranteeing transparency in elections.”

The resolution letter asked the government to make biometric the voting system and bring reforms to the electoral system as per recommendations of the political parties and movements.

The parties also asked the government to facilitate political parties and civil society groups in monitoring the elections.

They warned of pursuing their demands through legal ways if the government did nothing to ensure transparent elections.

They urged the international community to play its part in ensuring fair and transparent elections in Afghanistan as per the wishes of Afghans.

The gathering in Kabul was attended by political heavyweights including Atta Mohammad Noor, Younus Qanoni, Ismail Khan, Zalmai Rassoul, Mohammad Muhaqqiq, Humayun Humayun, Zahir Qadir, Dr. Anwarul Haq Ahadi, Rahmatullah Nabil and Jubish party leader Bashir Ahmad and others.
