KABUL have proven they are not committed to peace, President Ashraf Ghani’s office said on Friday.

The government positively responded to demands of citizens and respected national consensus on peace, a statement from the Presidential Palace said, alleging the rebel movement was adamant on fighting.

“Unfortunately, direct negotiations did not take place with the armed opposition in Abu Dhabi,” the Palace deplored, saying the government had discharged its responsibility but the armed opposition rejected talks..

Representatives of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US had expressed deep regrets regarding Taliban’s decision to stay away from direct talks with the peace negotiators of the government, the statement added.

Taliban’s refusal once again showed they did not care about the welfare of the region and were not committed to peace. The fighters were intent upon continuity of war, the Palace maintained.

The group’s refusal to negotiate was a political setback, Ghani’s office said, adding the government would continue making efforts for peace and the Afghan forces remained ready to defend the people.
