Afghanistan, Iran to sign energy cooperation deal

KABUL Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said on Sunday.

DABS in a statement said the power utility’s head met with a high-level Iranian delegation and discussed with them the mentioned issues on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by Iranian deputy energy minister Eng Hamayon Haeri, Iranian Charge de Affairs for Afghanistan, Sayed Sayeed Husaini and a number of other Iranian authorities, the source said.

The aim of the meeting was to forge better coordination among energy beneficiaries, the statement said.

The officials of the two countries discussed extension of power to border districts of Afghanistan, creating a joint technical group, exploitation of investment opportunities in the energy sector in Afghanistan and creation of a practical work map for short and long term projects.

The statement said assessment of electricity extension to districts on the Afghanistan-Iran border ---- Herat, Farah and Nimroz provinces – and extension of electricity contract for Herat and Nimroz provinces for the next 1399 solar year and some other issues were also discussed.

Purchasing electricity equipment from major Iranian companies, studying extension of 500 kilo volts of power cable on the Tarbutjam-Herat route and Kandahar and some other electricity related topics also came up for discussion in the meeting.

The meeting would continue for the next two days and a cooperation agreement between the two countries would be also signed on the mentioned issues.
