KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 32 people were killed and 123 others wounded as a result of 113 attacks on election day across the country, Pajhwok has learnt.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) said intelligence agents had been ableto prevent dozens of militant attacks.

On Saturday, voting started at 7am and ended at 5pm under strong security. At least 13 candidates contested the presidential election.

Based on information from different sources, 64 of the attacks were claimed by the Taliban and 59 others remained unclaimed.

A clash in Charikar, the capital of central Parwan province, resulted in the killing of an individual. Most of the attacks (29) took place in Nangarhar.

Seven assaults happened each in Laghman, Parwan and Sar-i-Pul and six each in Faryab and Zabul.

The remaining attacks occurred in Khost, Badakhshan, Ghor, Kabul, Kunar, Samangan, Kunduz, Farah, Ghazni, Helmand, Jawzjan, Kapisa, Nimroz, Nuristan, Paktia, Takhar, Uruzgan, Baghlan, Balkh and Daikundi.

Casualties

Reports show that 32 people were killed and 123 others wounded during the attacks.

The incidents of violence happened in 26 provinces, but the casualties took place in 10 provinces.

The number of casualties might be higher than Pajhwok’s findings, because telephoniccontactswere not possible in some areas.

Claims of warring sides

The spy service said the security and defence forces had prevented dozens of attacks in Kabul and other provinces.

It added the security personnel had also captured 14 Taliban in Kabul.At least 34 militants were killed in Logar, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Balkh, Herat, Kunar, Helmand and Khost.

Interior Minister MassoudAndarabi said at least 251 insurgents had been killed between Friday midnight and Saturday.

On the other hand, the Taliban claimed that 422 security personnel had suffered casualties in 513 attacks.
