Helmandis fed up with Taliban control over 6 towns

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Residents of southern Helmand province say they are fed up with insecurity due to Taliban’s control over six districts of the province for the last few years.

The Taliban have been in control of Nawzad, Musa Qala, Sangin and Khanshin districts since 2015 and since a decade of Baghran and Deshu districts.

Helmand provincial council head Attaullah Afghan told Pajhwok Afghan News on Thursday that the government’s writ prevailed only in the centers of Marjah, Kajaki and a few other districts.

“Districts under government control are relatively peaceful, but the districts where the Taliban are in control are insecure and pose threat to other secure areas and this situation has worried the residents.”

Abdul Haq Zwakman, a civil society activist in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, said the government had never shown readiness to retake these districts from insurgents.

“We wonder why the government never took any action to reclaim these districts because insecurity in these areas pose a serious threat to other areas.”

Meanwhile, 215 Maiwand Military Corps commander Gen. Zabihullah Momand said operations were being launched to retake districts under Taliban’s control. However, he did not provide any details in this regard.

In this regard, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the people of Helmand had no problem with the Taliban. “The Taliban are sons of these people and they will protect their people at the cost of their lives.”

Helmand has 14 districts and the Taliban have been in control of six towns.
