MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Three people, including a woman, were sentenced from 14 to 18 years in jail for kidnapping and sexual crimes in northern Balk province.
The three were handed down the jail sentences during in open trial in Mazar-i-Sharif City, the provincial capital. The convicts included Zalmay, Ghulam Rasoul and Sunbal.
The prosecutor in the case, Karmal, told Pajhwok Afghan News the three had kidnapped Haji Mohammad Alam, a resident of the provincial capital, and demanded $20,0000 for his release.
Haji Mohammad Alam, who was also present in the court, said the kidnappers wanted to kill him.
He said Sunbal had invited him and Zalmay and Ghulam Rasoul kidnapped him and held him in captivity until he was managed to escape.
Qazai Wajihauddin, head of the Balkh appellate courts, while announcing the verdict said, “The court sentences Zalmay and GhulamRasould to 18 years of imprisonment each and Sunbal to two years and six months imprisonment for her sexual case and to 12 years imprisonment in the kidnapping case.”
The convicts had confessed to their crimes and had demanded justice.
The appellate courts head said the convicts have the right to appeal against the sentences.
