KABUL and pave the way for enduring peace.

Sohail Shaheen, Taliban political office spokesman in Doha, on his twitter account wrote that the opposite site should also remove hurdles in the way of the peace accord’s implementation in order to pave the ground for lasting peace and enable the Afghans to avail their rights.

Under peace deal signed between the US and the Taliban in Doha last month, the Afghan government would release 5000 Taliban prisoners in exchange for 1000 captives with the rebels, a clause President Ghani questioned.

As the weeklong reduction in violence period ended on Saturday, the Taliban resumed attacks on Afghan security forces and today the US conducted first airstrikes against the rebels in southern Helmand province since the deal was signed.

A spokesperson for the US forces in Afghanistan said the airstrikes in Helmand were carried out after the Taliban stormed Afghan forces in Greshk district. She said the Taliban had promised with the international community that they would not increase attacks and would reduce violence.

Reports say President Trump spoke with Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradaar by phone Tuesday about ending the war in Afghanistan, the first known direct contact between an American president and the militant movement.
