JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Nangarhar Governor Shah Mahmood Miakhel on Sunday claimed some government officials and parliamentarians wanted their relatives to be exempted from being quarantined at Torkham border township.

This comes as Pakistan is reopening Torkham crossing from April 6 to 9 to allow thousands of Afghans in Pakistan to return to their country.

Nangarhar officials have set up a quarantine facility for at least 3,000 people as part of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The number of coronavirus patients in Pakistan has reached nearly 3,000.

The Nangarhar governor, however, claimed some government officials and lawmakers had asked him to exempt their relatives from quarantine.

“All restrictions shall be implemented equally on all citizens, if we want coronavirus to be restricted. If officials and lawmakers want to help us, they should cooperate with us by sending tents and other equipment to the quarantine facility,” he said.

Torkham Mayor said all passengers shall stay at the facility.  “We are also in quarantine from the past 11 days and if passengers return, they should apply the process,” he said.
