KABUL in the Zaree district of northern Balkh province, a well-placed source said on Friday.
Local residents claimed the Taliban launched fighting on Thursday and continued till Friday morning.
Tribal Leader Haji Rahim said the Taliban first started the fighting by attacking check-posts of local uprising groups.
Nearly 40 security personnel, most local uprising members, have been killed and injured in the clash, he said.
Former Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor on his facebook page wrote that 13 people were killed and 25 others injured during a clash in Zare district. He said the Taliban are not committed to peace.
Police also acknowledge clash in Zare district but did not provide details regarding casualties.
The Taliban have not spoken about the incident.
