KABUL, says a media report.

Earlier in the month, Esper conveyed his concerns to the White House about the spiking violence in Afghanistan in a classified memo.

President Trump fired him on Monday after the then secretary opposed the White House’s plans for additional cuts as imprudent, the Washington Post said.

The US withdrawal agreement with the Kabul and the Taliban is dependent on several factors, including an overall cut in violence.

However, after the February peace deal, violence in the country has considerably increased, prompting a stark warning from US officials.

On Friday, Esper’s successor Chris Miller informed Defense Department employees: “it’s time to come home” from the war against Al Qaida.

McClatchy’s Washington bureau quoted Miller’s memo as saying: “We are not a people of perpetual war — it is the antithesis of everything for which we stand and for which our ancestors fought.”

“All wars must end,” the memo stressed, with Miller saying: “This is the critical phase in which we transition our efforts from a leadership to supporting role.
