SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): A 50-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman hung themselves separately due to abject poverty in northern Jawzjan province, police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesman Masood Nadim told Pajhwok Afghan News that Gul Parha, the 22-year-old woman, committed suicide in her home in Golestan village of the city late Monday night.
He said Yar Mohammad, a 50-year-old resident of Gadam area of Shiberghan, also took his life because of poverty. The man would buy and sell iron to eke out a living.
The man left behind three daughters, a son and his body had been transferred to hospital for post-mortem examination.
Dr. Abdul GhaffarKhoshiwal, director of public health, said police brought the bodies of a man and a woman to the hospital on Monday night.
He said after examination, it became clear that the two persons had committed suicide by strangling and that this was the cause of their death.
The bodies of both, which showed no signs of beatings, were handed over to their families, he said.
MoghafratSamimi, provincial head of the human rights organization, told Pajhwok that mostly such incidents resulted from abject poverty.
