ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Governor of southwestern Nimroz province on Thursday said construction work on Kamal Khan Dam was about to complete and it was currently under test of water flow before being officially inaugurated in the near future.

Kamal Khan Dam is one of the country’s major projects launched during the leadership of former president, Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan. Besides irrigating large swaths of land, the dam would be also able to generate nine megawatts of electricity.

The new Afghan government resumed work on the project and completed the first phase of it in 2013 and the second phase in 2016. The final and main phase of the project was started in 2017 on a cost of $80 million.

Zamaryali Ahadi, governor of Nimroz province, talking to Pajhwok Afghan News said that Kamal Khan Dam was one of the country’s major projects which was currently on the completion point and water flow was successfully tested in the dam.

He congratulated successful test of water flow in the dam for the Afghan people, particularly residents of Nimroz province and said that the project would be inaugurated in presence of high profile officials in the near future.

With the completion of the project, large number of people would be provided with work opportunities, particularly in the agriculture area, he added.

Meanwhile, a number of provincial council members of Nimroz who visited the dam said that completion of the project was a great achievement for the Afghan government.

Niamatullah Sidiqi, a provincial council member of the province, said, “We are happy that Kamal Khan Dam after long years of wait completed with the efforts of the Afghan government, today we see water flow in it and we would soon see its inauguration.”

A number of residents of Nimroz province were also happy about the water flow test in the dam.

Ali Ahmad Muhajir, a resident of the second police district of Zaranj, capital of Nimroz, said, “We the people of Nimroz thank from the president of our country for his attention to complete Kamal Khan Dam, we could not see the water flow in this dam if the president had not paid attention to it.”

He said that the project would help better management of water, agriculture and create work opportunities for Nimroz people.
