KABUL (Pajhwok): Following the exit of foreign troops later in the year, Afghan forces may lose their ability to hold their ground, says a top US military commander.
US Central Command chief Gen. Frank McKenzie told Congress: “I am concerned about the ability of the Afghan military to hold on after we leave, the ability of the Afghan Air Force to fly, in particular…”
“My concern is the ability of the Afghan military to hold the ground that they’re on now without the support that they’ve been used to for many years,” McKenzie added.
He indicated the US would maintain military influence and the ability to conduct air strikes in Afghanistan after troops left the country by September 11.
The commander, in a message to the Taliban, said the US would be well-prepared to defend its troops throughout the withdrawal process.
Gen. McKenzie said the drones used in Afghanistan were capable of reaching the country from the bases of US allies in the Gulf.
