TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents captured the bazaar and the district administration building of Gizab district of central Uruzgan province after several group attacks on Wednesday night, local residents said on Thursday.

Former district chief Abdullah told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban captured Kaakh, Chawni, BalaZhara, Dara-i-Sandan, KhiliNawo, Omid, Qizilbash and many more areas of the district.

He said the Taliban took 13 policemen hostage and there were no figures of casualties so far.

Another source, wishing anonymity, confirmed to Pajhwok that Taliban had captured the market and many other areas of Gizab district.

The source said two policemen were killed in clashes and currently the Afghan National Army (ANA) battalion was fighting the Taliban.

Government forces recaptured Gizab district from the Taliban around three months ago and deployed their security posts.

Uruzgan governor Mohammad Omar Shirzad in a press conference accepted that government security personnel and Taliban were clashing in Gizab but assured that Taliban would not be able to capture the district.

The governor assured that Taliban would never succeed to capture the district because Afghan Government Security and Defense Forces were available there and they were capable of defending the people.

The Taliban have not yet commented on Gizab clashes.
