JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The residents of eastern Nangarhar province say the municipality has issued a new price-list which shows higher rates compared to the past lists and has no mention of essential commodities.

The residents of Jalalabad, the provincial capital, say primary goods and items the prices of which have gone up including flour and ghee have not been given place in the price list.

They demanded of the municipality to review the price list, bring down prices and essential items be mentioned in the list.

The price list was created by the Jalalabad municipality last Thursday in consultation with the trader community, but people say the price list favour traders, not the people.

Ghulamullah, a resident of Jalalabad, said he bought a bag of flour for 1900 afghanis while until recently the same bag was sold for 1700 afghanis.  He said municipality price list had no mention of flour and ghee and it carried the names of some ordinary things.

Another resident, Hilaluddin, said tailors would sew a dress for 350 afghanis but the municipality had fixed 180afs rate for a dress in the new list. He said prices of many other items had been increased in the list.

“Very important things are not mentioned in the price list,” he said.

Civil society activist Khanzada Afghan said customs duty had been reduced but still prices were high and the new government was doing nothing to control the prices.

Shopkeepers in Jalalabad said they had not yet received the new price list and once receiving it  they would follow the law.

Shopkeeper Najibullah said they had not raised prices but traders had raised the rates and they had not received the new price list so far.

Deputy mayor Yahya Ghaforzai  told Pajhwok Afghan News they had started consultation with traders in order bring dawn prices and review price lists.

He said there had been problems initially but all problems were solved.

Besides Nangarhar and Kabul, residents of other provinces are also complaining about high prices and ask the Taliban government to control the prices.
