JALALABAD (Pajhwok): An Ulema Council has been formed in the Behsud district of eastern Nangarhar province to address public issues through the jirga mechanism.

Residents of Behsud, welcoming the move, urged the council to play a mediatory role in settling disputes under the Sharia law.

District chief Qari Imran said for improved security and resolution of public dispute, the Ulema Council had been formed. The panel has started functioning.

He hoped in the presence of religious scholars, existing public disputes would be resolved amicably. Yesterday (Sunday), the council started functioning, he added.

Ameer Mohammad, resident of Khas locality, told Pajhwok Afghan News such councils were effectives because they resolved public issues in line with the Islamic law.

He asked local officials to help the religious scholars implement their decisions in the best public interest.
