SHEBRGHAN (Pajhwok): Keleft Port, the country’s most ancient port on the border with Turkmenistan in Qarqin district of northwestern Jawzjan province is set to reopen for commercial transport, officials say.
The port which is located 20 kilometers away from the center of Qarqin district, is one of the country’s most ancient commercial ports.
Mullah Jurah, border commander in Qarqin district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Keleft Port was the country’s important commercial port and hub commercial deals between the two neighboring countries.
He said that reconstruction of the port would begin in the near future. “Reopening of the port would have a positive impact on the country’s economic situation,” he said.
“After Torghandi and Aqina ports, Keleft is the third important commercial port and efforts are on for its activation,” Jurah said.
A number of residents of Qarqin district appreciated the government’s efforts for activating the port, but said that there were no any facilities available there to manage commercial activities.
Biram Qul, a resident of the district, said that four decades of the conflict had damaged the port and some facilities which were present there had been ruined.
“It is without a doubt that reactivation of Keleft Port would help improve the country’s economy and create jobs, but making it fully functional would take time,” he added.
Keleft Port was closed during the soviet invasion of Afghanistan and after opening of Hairatan Port in Balkh province.
