Commission to assess failures of US war

KABUL (Pajhwok): The US congress has created a 16-member commission to assess the failures of two-decade war in Afghanistan.

Lawmakers voted to on Wednesday to set up the commission, whose members would be appointed by the two major parties, AFP reported.

The commission has been given a deadline to issue a preliminary report within a year of its first meeting and a final report within three years.

The commission was part of a $768 billion annual defense package approved by the Senate 89-10. Last week, the bill was given the go-ahead by the House of Representatives.

President Joe Biden, whose withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in August triggered severe criticism, may sign the National Defense Authorization Act.

The commission will offer recommendations to inform future operations with tactical and strategic lessons learned.

Earlier, the Trump administration signed an agreement with the Taliban that set a May 2021 deadline for US forces to exit Afghanistan.

According to AFP, the commission will also look at ex-president George W. Bush´s launch of the war and US policy on Afghanistan before 2001.
