Govt rejects UN report about killing of past officials

KABUL (Pajhwok): The acting Afghan government has rejected a UN report that accused it of killing dozens of officials and individuals who worked with the previous government and foreign forces.

More than 100 former members of the Afghan government, its security forces and those who worked with international troops have been killed since the Taliban took over the country in August.

“Despite announcements of general amnesties for former members of the Government, security forces and those who worked with international military forces, [the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan] UNAMA continued to receive credible allegations of killings, enforced disappearances, and other violations” against former government and coalition members, the report published by Routers said.

It also received “credible allegations of extrajudicial killings of at least 50 individuals suspected of affiliation with ISIL-KP”, the ISIL affiliate operating in Afghanistan, according to the report.

However, the acting Afghan government rejected the report.

Government Deputy Spokesperson Bilal Karimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the report was based on inaccurate information and was not true.

“After general amnesty announced by Islamic Emirate, nobody is allowed to harm civilians or security personnel of the past government. Their lives are protected and nobody could harm them,” he said.

“I don’t acknowledge the numbers of people killed in the UN report. Suppose if someone is killed or harmed on the basis of personal enmity, Islamic Emirate forces investigated the incident and brought it to the court of law,” said Karimi.

Interior Ministry also rejected the UN report and said: “Islamic Emirate did not kill anybody after the announcement of a general amnesty. Some personnel of the past government were killed based on personal enmity and these incidents are being investigated.”

The ministry asked the UN not to rely on information provided by biased sources and consider facts on the ground and keep themselves updated.
